The Industry's Dirty Secret: The "Authoritative Theory" Is Just the Scientific Root of the 100-Year Suffering

Every industry advances only through breakthroughs in basic-theory-based architecture innovation. Yet the high performance boat industry has stagnated for over a century--chained to a single lie: the "violent motions"(making the ride in real life full of pitching, rolling, heaving, rocking, jumping, transom throwing, side skidding, sharp heeling, bow steering, etc) are globally accepted as a "necessary trade-off" for performance by purposely hiding the truth of compromising fundamental safety for pleasing flat water data.

 

The lie is baked into the "authoritative theories" governing every mainstream hull design: from hard-chined deep-V hulls to catamarans, trimarans and hulls of other forms.


The problem? These theories have fatal flaws in their scientific working logic--flaws encoded into the "DNA", the basic architecture platform of every boat. They do not just "cause problems"--they create the "world-class bottlenecks" that keep the industry stuck. To help better observe how the industry is made to keep stagnating, we will get the hard-chined deep-V hull architecture as example to explore how it comes to fatally decide the fatal problems of the industry, considering more than 99% of high performance boats of today are developed just on this basic hull architecture platform.


The Hard-chined Deep-V Hull Theory:
Its "deep-V shaped" bottom is supposed to "cut waves", but it actually amplifies vertical forces. Why? Because stability, seakeeping ability and efficiency are inherently conflicting--and stability has to be always prioritized over the others to make the boat stable and upright on water as the most decisive key to safety.

 

Thus, when a wave hits the bow, the endless conflicts in parameters setting will make the bow to inherently and horribly lift high above water to allow the wave to directly slam the midship hull bottom and then the boat will fall down and heavily slam onto the surface of the sea by gravity force (just like falling from a 3-story building and even far higher, subject to boat speed, location of lonmgitudinal center of gravity and wave height), triggering "slamming loads" that crack the hull structures, damage machinery and injure crews (Breakdowns are not found in sea trial acceptance test just because the time is yet to come but common sense tells us this is something unavoidable and only waiting to happen, since nothing can sustain proper working in such harsh working environment).

 

You can see the flaws clearly shown in the GA drawing below--it's from a so-called "world-class safe boat" designed and built by a top US shipyard. This drawing alone shows how the DNA flaws are baked into every hard-chined deep-V hull based boat.  

 

 

The Spray Rails/Lifting Strakes Theory:

The "sharp rails (also called lifting strakes) with flat bottom" running along and situated close to the hull's keel line with approx. 2-3 rails on each hull bottom side are designed to "deflect sprays" to the sides for different speeds in an violent manner, rather than gently redirecting or trapping water to get the sprays to gently and steadily lift the hull. This fundamental flaw in design mean today's spray rails not only increase hull drag in real-life irregular waves (though it reduce drag in flat water due to added lift and reduced wetted areas above dynamic waterline), but also worsen both lateral and longitudinal instability because of creating force concentration in an imbalanced way. Worse still, in irregular waves, they alter the hull's trim angle violently--slowing forward momentum, turning small swells into even far more violent rocking, jumping and flying-out and ultimately deteriorating the working environment for the crews, the structures, the machinery, the equipment, the electronics and the sensors.


Please just take a look at below GA drawing from a so-called world-class safe and capable boat designbed and built by a premium US shipyard as example to show how the flaws are baked into the DNA of boats built on the problematic hard-chined deep-V hull architecture with an even more problematic spray rails setting:

 

 

Yet,  The Industry's Rule Bar Doubles Down on The Lie:

Instead of fixing these flaws, the industry rule doubles down:

Class societies set low safety bars: These bars give huge room for poorly designed boats to easily satisfy through the way of performance limiting--no military, paramilitary or professional boat users obeys. Why? Because the performance limits imposed by these rule-based standards are far lower than what real-life mission demands.

 

Besides, low safety bars setting only considering simple dimensional factors by class rules also means that designers have no interest to tackle challenges of real life--They prefer to focus on how to make the boat look pleasing.

 

The conflict between low safety bars by class rules and high performance required by mission helps bring an even worse situation: Boats for real-life missions are always used with performance far higher than limited by safety bars thus far higher risks are made to reality but all parties like designers, builders and class societies can safely get rid of the responsibility by law except the users--This explains why users are always regarded by law as the responsible party in the result of investigations of many tragedies recorded worldwide.

 

Thus, unless foundational working logic of the boats is changed, otherwise the ridiculous cycle will be made to play endlessly again and again.

 

 

The Ridiculous World: Evidences Showing A World Full of Endless Failures and Crew Injuries Are Marketed as Evidences of What A World-class Safe and Capable Boat Shall Be Like

Top brands and countless followers market danger as capacity: Premium US/EU/UK/Australian designers and builders of so-called "elite" brands advertise safety-threatening behaviors as "proof of world-class safety and performance" by showing such visually identified, real-life based, horribly violent riding motions of their boats at the most outstanding place of their marketing documents and website, as evidence to indicate "Our boat stays intact even when it moves violently like such"--then call violent jumping "agility" and bone-jarring slamming "seakeeping" of "world class"--This is criminal!

 

Just as shown by below exampled boats (Regardless of hull size, structural material, propulsion and functionalities) which are all best designed boats of today from the most reputed and expeienced US/EU/UK/Australian designers and builders and marketed as boats with world-class safety and tough mission capabilities--The sea is visually justified to be still very gentle with no significant waves or swells but the boats have been made to be so horribly exciting by their shared problematic DNA, abruptly pitching, rolling, heaving, rocking, jumping and even fully flying out from water: Please, just follow common sense with no need of in-depth knowledge and ask yourself if you can work properly and avoid being injured in such harsh working environment inherently brought by the problematic hull architecture platform, then, you will come to understand why the life of a high performance boat for open sea mission is so full of failures, full of energy wasting, full of capabilities limiting and full of crew injuries/deaths, wordwide, throughout every government agency!

The Shocking Truth: Behind Every So-called World-class Safe and Capable Boat Is A 100% Crew Injuries Rate, Worldwidely, Only Waiting to Be Disclosed To the Public

Just as we have repeatedly emphasized, no machinery, equipment, electronics, sensors, hull structures and users can perform properly in such horribly violent motions. To help better learn the shocking truth long time not disclosed to the public, please take a look at below result from a survey on Impact Induced Injuries Onboard High Speed Boats conducted by CWO5(ret) SWCC Ron Carpenter, showing 91% injuries rate--Based on our fact-based research and systematic statistics, the actual rate is 100%, not 91%, the difference only lies in waiting to happen: The situation is just like the evidence of showing a boat riding violently but still intact during sea trial is not evidence of what a world-class safe and capable boat shall be like but evidence about the truth that the world of high performance boat operation is a world full of endless suffering, failure, damage, injuries and tragedies!
